Not right

Hmm. As you can see something is Just Not Right here on the blog. I'm convimced a script kiddie has been fiddling, but I haven't found the time to dig deep enough yet. Working on it!

Hmm.

battered and fresh

Poor old giraffe, so badly battered. Almost everything on his head replaced countless times; the filling spilling out of his little hooves. High time for retirement.

battered and fresh giraffes

sea giraffe

tadaah! the sea giraffe.
happy to see it was as well-received as previous ones.

sea giraffe

Tulips

One mistake, smack in the middle of it. Didn't find out until way beyond and did not find the time (nor the energy) to correct it.

Apart from that very pleased with the result.

tulip shrug

Trinity

Eldest's giraffe is still holy. She's turned 8 now, the child not the cuddly toy, and she views it in a different light. But now that the two year old striped giraffe is starting to fall apart she has requested a new one regardless.

This falling apart needs some elaboration – whenever she gets the chance the dog at dad's house jealously chews ears, horns and tail off the poor toy. It has been repaired countless times until I forbade eldest to take the giraffe there any longer. Lately I only re-did the ears and horns as those are needed for sucking on. I had stopped re-embroidering the face, making a new tail, even the fiddly ears did not make it last time.

But now other parts are showing severe wear. The stuffing comes out of the legs and the whole animal is looking worn and old. Time for his pension and for His Third Homemade Holiness to rise.

Honestly, I have been going through my stash. But I just could not find a suitable yarn – soft but not fuzzy yet strong enough to bear serious manhandling. And the occasional suction of the horns in trying times. Off to Arthur Bales it was.

We've had beige, beige (store bought twins), purple and giraffe colours. As eldest loves the sea, the new colour suits that. The Rowan Tweed at the centre is the main colour and the top Kingfisher blue (Vinnis Nikkim) became the contrast colour. I wanted a blue or it would have been more of a meadow giraffe.

colour choosing

Jacaranda with tulips

Big sister just turned 8. Her shrug is as purple as the jacaranda trees that bloom this time of year. Proof that spring is really here. Didn't feel like lace lace so it will be just a few tulips. Needle size could have been a half mm smaller but I feared it would turn out smallish... also I want it to be airy, not stiff.

Jacaranda with tulips

Grote zus is net 8 geworden.

Shrug

The kiddie cardi that never wanted to be has been turned into a shrug. Everybody happy. Started it 5 years and two months ago.

Youngest's shrug

Reid and the suffering shrug

The delight of deciding on a new project... Picking the yarn from stash, going through the mental list of plans, looking at what is needed... Like a shrug for youngest, who ate her sleeves and has grown out of the long-suffering pink thing anyhow.

I started swatching with some lovely turquoise Rowan All seasons cotton, that looked as if it could be a quick shrug. Found some nice patterns on Ravelry already. Not entirely sure if I have enough yarn though, and this colour may no longer be available.

Then there was the pattern that didn't fit this Aran yarn, the Heart party shrug. I have some lilac Rowan Milk cotton DK that would look great in that pattern.

While pottering around the house from stash to desk and back I came past the 'showcase cupboard' by the front door. Where a half Reid has been lying around since before the dawn of humankind. What to do with her?

She suffered from a giant sizing problem. Somehow, five years ago, I chose a DK yarn instead of the prescribed mercerised cotton and despite the correct needle size the back panel ended up being able to dress a whole child instead of just a half one (and my girls are really tall). The work has been restarted several times due to initial mistakes in the lace. In other words, even though the fit was way off I had invested lots of time in it, which makes it sore to rip it.

But today it took just a short look to see a shrug... I am going to put short sleeves on it, a big cuff and it's done!

Reid and the suffering shrug

All that was left

This is all that was left. So the ripping and reknitting can be declared a success.

The sleeves currently end just below the elbows and the body reaches the hips. The v-neck is quite wide but that didn't have anything to do with the amount of yarn.

I am very curious how it will look after the first wash, as the yarn is notorious for expanding in all directions.

Weirder still: I myself am no longer doing just that. Because of the expected larger eventual outcome I knit a size M. But I am as surprised as anyone that the result just properly fits nowadays.

It's been a long way from XXL+ to here, but while staring a a seemingly stuck scale for a week now I can confirm that the surprises on the way make my day!

All that was left

Rip and redo

The jersey's counter is set back to 80%. The moment I openend the cupboard and found 3 balls left instead of the 4 or 5 I was hoping for I knew there would likely be a moment like this, as the yarn is discontinued.

So when all was used and the body ended at belly button height it was time to rip part of the sleeves. Once I got going I undid the last ball on the body as well, as it was getting a bit wide.

rip and redo

Sleeves tackled

The soon-to-be-wide jersey (due to expansive yarn) is doing nicely. Finished the V-neck and at the end of my ball decided to first do the sleeves as I find those really boring. All done. Have just returned to the body.

soon to be wide jersey

The brat in the hat

Finished youngest's hat. Yeah it is summer here - but the ice skating classes continue :) Ideal waiting knit. Amazing how many colours of this yarn I have!
