finished my orange hat in time for tomorrow's event: the children of the dutch school* will attend the public training of the dutch world cup team. i bet it's ok if the parents dress up too ;)

* (the dutch school offers an afternoon a week in the home language, from the age of 4)

group project, phase one

our vrede group - named after the free state village where we spent many a weekend - is doing very very well. today we met at j.'s home because she is just out of hospital and in desparate need of distraction. jayne deemed it the right opportunity for a lace tutorial.

at one of the vrede sessions the plan was hatched to knit a lace project together. each of us chose her own colour of yarn from the knit picks website. they don't ship outside the u.s., but i. will travel there in august and is to come back with a suitcase full of yarn. the dollar was low so really, we had no excuses left.

as we all have vastly different preferences and experience in knitting, jayne picked a pilot project: the haruni lace shawl. so today we all sat on and around j.'s bed while jayne led us through the fussy project start. we paid attention, we cursed, we laughed, we helped each other out. an evening very well spent.

het gaat uitstekend met de vrede groep - genoemd naar het dorpje in de vrijstaat waar we menig weekeinde doorbrachten. vandaag kwamen we bij elkaar bij j. thuis, die net uit het ziekenhuis is en dringend behoefte heeft aan afleiding. jayne bedacht dat dit de juiste gelegenheid was voor een kantklasje.

tijdens een van de vrede-sessie ontstond het plan om gezamenlijk een kantproject te breien. we kozen elk onze favoriete kleur wol op de knit picks website. die versturen niet overzee, maar i. reist er in augustus heen voor haar werk en komt terug met een koffer vol wol. bovendien stond de dollar laag, dus hadden we geen smoezen meer nodig.

omdat we allemaal totaal verschillende voorkeuren hebben en de brei-ervaring navenant uiteenloopt, koos jayne een proefproject uit: de haruni sjaal. of heet dat een stola? vandaag zaten we allemaal op en rond j.'s bed terwijl jayne ons door de lastige opzet heen praatte. we hebben opgelet, we hebben gevloekt, we hebben gelachen, we hebben elkaar geholpen. een fantastische middag.

not dead

i'm still here! it's been too hot to spin but i have done some knitting. have been terribly busy though so the write-up is wayyy behind. working on it...

ik ben er nog! het was te heet om te spinnen (het is hier immers zomer) maar ik heb wel een paar dingen gebreid. heb het achterlijk druk gehad dus het noteren schoot er ernstig bij in. wordt aan gewerkt...

grown out of a wip

back in south africa and i was looking forward to pick up the kiddie cardi i started a year ago. alas, toddlers have a habit of growing like mad, so i will need to rip it and knit a different size.

we managed to bring my ashford joy. even though my louet s10dt was patiently waiting for me here, i'm still very happy about not having to do without the other for half a year or so.

terug in zuid-afrika en ik zag ernaar uit om het kindervestje weer op te pakken waar ik een jaar geleden aan begon. helaas hebben peuters de gewoonte om als een gek te groeien, dus moet ik het uithalen en een andere maat gaan maken.

het is ons gelukt om mijn ashford joy mee te nemen. ook al stond mijn louet s10dt hier geduldig op me te wachten, ik vind het toch heerlijk dat ik niet een half jaar of zo zonder de andere hoef te doen.

skein box

the box of my not so new anymore mac book pro was still lying around the house and i finally put it to good use :) 180x105cm= 189 meters of lilac and blue.

now what to use to combine it into the intended kiddie cardigan..? i've just bought my first dye set (at national spinning day) so the second colour could become anything!

lilac rabbit

it's not easy to see (the iphone is not almighty) but in reality this stuff is lilac. and it's angora rabbit. ssso sssssoft!

my excuse to buy it at the national spinning day (yesterday) was that my overplied sock wool should be finished with lilac.

what do you mean i spun the lilac and blue since then? first off that was for a kiddie sweater... secondly it's the same colour as the sock wool's basic colour. no it wasn't a lame excuse - i really needed this rabbit, that is obvious.

baktus is going well. it's a super ideal project for in-between-knitting.

throat, not feet

it was this nice big ball of sock wool's turn. a bit of it was used to finish a pair of baby socks, as the original yarn was slightly too short again. so i'd say it earned its spot on top of the list of next projects.

but what to make? this lana grossa meilenweit two in one is a rather busy sock yarn with nice autumny colours. too busy for a sock pattern; the results would be invisible. but i didn't feel like doing another plain vanilla sock. so on to ravelry for inspiration. what have others made of this particular yarn?

well socks obviously. but there was one of very few other projects that appealed to me - i had been looking at it earlier. the meilenweit two in one is to become a baktus kerchief.

the designer recommends using a kitchen scale to define the turning point. as i don't have one in this temporary household i guess i will have to visit someone who does by the time i estimate being about halfway...

het was de beurt aan een mooie bol sokkenwol. een beetje was al gebruikt om een paar babysokjes af te maken, want daar had ik weer eens net te weinig garen voor. dus zijn plaatsje bovenaan de lijst van volgende projecten was verdiend.

maar wat zou ik er nou eens van maken? deze lana grossa meilenweit two in one is een tamelijk drukke sokkenwol met mooie herfstkleuren. te druk voor een sokkenpatroon; de resultaten van de inspanningen zouden onzichtbaar zijn. ik had ook geen zin in nog een rechttoe rechtaan sok. op naar ravelry voor inspiratie. wat hebben anderen van dit merk en type gemaakt?

sokken, uiteraard. maar tussen de weinige andere projecten zat er een die me aansprak - daar had ik al eens eerder interesse voor. de meilenweit two in one wordt een baktus halsdoek.

de ontwerpster raadt aan om een keukenweegschaal te gebruiken voor het bepalen van het omslagpunt. omdat ik er zelf geen heb in dit tijdelijke huishouden zal ik maar eens op visite gaan tegen de tijd dat ik denk dat ik halverwege ben...

dad done

it's five weeks before i remigrate to south africa so instead of packing already i'm taking time to finish my projects for people who are here in the netherlands - i remember all too well that no knitting ever resurfaces after being given into the greedy hands of sa post.

off the list as of today: my dad's third pair of socks. charade pattern, made in fortissima socka in a nice shade of denim blue mixed with a bit of green. liked the yarn. addi magic loop wasn't too pleasant as the needles are way too blunt for a pattern that requires psso's.

nog vijf weken te gaan voordat ik remigreer naar zuid-afrika, dus in plaats van alvast in te pakken besteed ik mijn tijd aan het afmaken van projecten voor mensen die hier in nederland zijn. ik herinner me maar al te goed dat geen enkel breiwerk ooit weer boven water komt nadat het in de grijpgrage handjes van sa post is afgegeven.

per vandaag van de lijst af: het derde paar sokken voor mijn vader. het patroon was charade, gemaakt in fortissima socka in een aardige kleur jeansblauw gemengd met een streepje groen. prettig garen. de addi magic loop was niet zo'n succes, die punten zijn veuls te stomp voor een patroon met overhalingen.

more stitches, more!

i don't do many toe up socks - stuck in my old ways i guess. the real reason is that i tend to be lost about sizing and have to redo the heels all the time.

but now that i am handling a very nice skein of expensive descent (schaefer anne) i want to use it all up. also i need to prevent i run out of yarn before i run out of foot. so i'm doing janneke's sok-basis basic toe up pattern. which is very nice. it's also full of maths to ensure your sock will fit perfectly.

however my recipient has very wide feet and a huuuge instep. completely opposite to my own feet. which makes fitting during progress a bit awkward. other people's feet taught me width will use up all the length if given half a chance. my sister in law's size 37'ish wide feet fit perfectly in a pair of socks once knit for my own size 41.

which is a long intro to telling i'm now doing the irish socks' heels for the third time. they fit me perfectly... and therefore the feet will be much too short for the yarn-buyer. more stitches! more stitches!

ik maak niet veel sokken van de teen af naar boven - ik zal wel vastgeroest zijn in mijn gebruikelijke methode. de belangrijkste reden is eigenlijk dat ik niet goed weet hoe het met de maatvoering zit en daardoor almaar de hielen opnieuw moet doen.

maar nu ik een duuure streng hele fijne wol onder handen heb (schaefer anne) wil ik het wel helemaal opgebruiken. ook moet ik voorkomen dat het garen op is voordat de voet af is. daarom doe ik nu jannekes sok-basis standaard van de teen af-patroon. wat heel lekker werkt. het staat bovendien vol met berekeningen waardoor je sok perfect kan passen.

lastig is dat de aanstaande ontvanger flink brede voeten heeft en een enooorme wreef. compleet tegenovergesteld aan mijn eigen voeten. dat maakt het passen en meten onderweg wat lastig. van de voeten van andere mensen heb ik geleerd dat breedte alle lengte in beslag neemt als het de kans krijgt. zo pasten de brede voeten van mijn schoonzus, ongeveer maat 37, perfect in een paar sokken die waren bedoeld voor mijn eigen maat 41.

al met al nogal een lange introductie om te vertellen dat ik nu de hielen van de ierse sokken voor de derde keer aan het doen ben. het paste mij perfect... en dus zullen de voeten veel te kort zijn voor degene die het garen kocht. meer steken! meer steken!

obscene spinning

ok so no dark grey mohair for a while, please. thus i considered it high time for jacqueline's lamb. i did spin a bit and it's nice stuff. however it should really be carded to enjoy the spinning.

then i remembered the spingroup's advice to finish the sock brew with some lilac. i dug in my mini stash, wondering what colour exactly that storm in the attic roving was again that i bought at the zwolle craft fair in february. and yes. it looks right.

the best part: after a few kinds of not so easy materials this merino is almost obscenely pleasant to spin. yum!

sturdy twist

at the spin group i didn't feel like continuing the dark grey mohair. so finally go ply something, said connie, who had mentioned several times that she was curious what it all would become. merino and silk in blues with a bit of red from de spinners, undyed merino, perhaps with some silk, i don't quite remember now, and the dark grey mohair.

while testing we soon found the white had to go as it made a classic barber pole. yek. blues and dark grey did turn out nicely. overtwist is good and sturdy for sock wool, but it was overdoing itself quite a bit..? it wasn't until two days later, when i finished the plying at home, that i suddenly saw the light. it will make a difference to ply counterclockwise. oops.

bij de spingroep even geen zin meer in de donkergrijze mohair. ga nou eindelijk eens wat twijnen dan, riep connie, want ze had al een paar keer gezegd dat ze zo benieuwd was hoe het ging worden. merino met zijde in blauwen met een beetje rood van de spinners, ongeverfde merino, ook met zijde geloof ik, maar dat weet ik niet meer uit mijn hoofd, en de donkergrijze mohair.

testend en wel kwamen we er snel achter dat de witte eruit moest want het werd een klassieke barber pole, zo'n vreselijke zuurstokkenstreep. blauwen met donkergrijs werd wel mooi. overtwist is mooi stevig voor sokkenwol, maar het werd wel behoorlijk erg..? pas twee dagen later, toen ik het twijnen thuis afmaakte, snapte ik ineens waarom. het wil natuurlijk wel schelen om het twijnen linksom te doen. oeps.
