Meetings, get togethersNext meeting | Last meeting| What to expectBookcrossing can be a one person experience. Many participants prefer it that way. But it also brings people together. Because, like any blooming internet group, bookcrossers like to see each other in real life every once in a while. To accomodate the organization of meetings we use a couple of Yahoo mailgroups: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bookcrossing-za/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BookCrossingJohannesburg/
Next meeting Gauteng: to be announced See details in the forum or check the mailgroup for who else is coming. All welcome!! What to expect at a meeting First meeting In the famous Boekehuis, Pieterb and nrrdgrrl met on April 9 for the first ever Gauteng bookcrossing meeting. The venue is located in Johannesburg-Auckland Park. Besides getting acquainted and talking about books and wild releases, we also planned the revolution ;-) or, we discussed how to get bookcrossing publicized. Funnily enough we ran into a journalist right away. She had come to the Boekehuis for an award ceremony. We hope she'll have time to do a piece on bookcrossing in the near future. Store owner Corina van der Spoel was also very interested in the bookcrossing concept. We felt very welcome and intend to remain at this venue for future meetings. What to expect at a meeting Nothing official... And certainly nothing formal. Very relaxt. People as interesting as you are. No incrowd. Every bookcrosser is welcome. A random number of bookcrossers meet in a public place. Whether you eat, drink or buy a book is up to you. Everyone pays his/her own. Announcing your appearance in advance is much appreciated; it means the venue has a clue about the number of people to expect. Despite that, even the unannounced are welcome. Then what? There's no agenda. Many people like to bring their books to swap, but there's no obligation to do so. Your being there is good enough. There's no dress code. A couple of hours of chatting, laughter, book recommendations... What about? To cite Douglas Adams: Life, the universe and everything. A couple of photo's maybe, and we all travel back with a good feeling. Contacting others Would you like contact with other bookcrossers? Would you like to be found by others? Why not check you profile, at the top of your bookshelf. If your town and province are spelled correctly and you chose South Africa as your country, your screen name is listed in the long list of South African bookcrossers. Did you know you can search if there are other people crossing books in your area? Here's how: http://www.bookcrossing.com/membersearch. |
